Bringing the hammam home

Bringing the hammam home
Nickel plated basin and accessories by Zenza

In many cultures a visit to the hammam is still very much a part of daily life. A weekly ritual dedicated to deep cleansing and relaxation, and a precursor to the luxury spa resorts that are now scattered across the globe.

Cosmetics companies are now bringing centuries-old cures and simpler ingredients to a wider audience – encouraging us to spend time pampering ourselves. Products containing Argan oil – traditionally used by Berber women to nourish the skin, nails and hair – are now appearing on beauty counters and purchasing a bar of Alep soap no longer involves a trip to Syria. Natural treatments are replacing the synthetic, as a craving for authenticity and simplicity prevails. We can now re-create the authentic hammam experience without having to leave our homes.

Zenza, based in the Netherlands, creates a range of handcrafted items for the home in beaten metals and stone, many of them handmade in Egypt. Its nickel-plated copper basins are decorated by hand and will turn daily necessities, such as washing our hands or brushing our teeth, into unique experiences.

Choose wall and floor tiles in neutral shades and a shower with a jet spray to tone the skin. Underfloor heating and a small chair or bench will bring warmth and comfort to the space. Then light some candles, swathe yourself in a big robe and relax.
